CONTRADICTIONS

" Chris, stop pulling on me.  What is all of this? Candles in the bathroom at five in the evening?  And what are you cooking? No, better yet what have you done..." Chris began unbuttoning her silk blouse and put a finger to her lip and said," Shush. Tonight, I have a surprise for you so relax". She looked in awe as she saw her clothing fall to the floor, and Chris took her hand to assist her into the tub. He bent over to pick up her clothing. As he was walking over to the closet in  the bathroom to hang her clothes up, he winked at her.

" I know. You were going to say, 'Chris that's my hundred dollar silk shirt and do you know how much those pants cost? You better get my clothes off the floor."

Speechless, because he was absolutely right, all she could do was smile. Chris was on his knees outside the tub, washing Sasha down, which ended in a water fight. He wrapped her in a towel and carried her to the bedroom and gently laid her down on the bed. He rubbed her body down with warm lavender massage oil and placed gentle kisses over her body. With self talk, Chris was able to get a handle on the situation and proceeded with the evening. In the dining room, Sasha found the lights dimmed, candles burning, and Sade playing softly in the background, china on the table and crystal wine glasses filled with white grape juice. Something was going on with Chris, and she wanted to know what it was. They ate a whole meal and Chris did not utter a word, this was highly unusual. Is it my imagination or is Chris sweating, she thought to herself. The moment was at hand. Chris reached over and grabbed Sasha's hand. " We need to talk." Oh no, not the we need to talk speech. Is this the part when he tells me that it's been real, but I think that we need time apart? Hadn't she heard women tell these horror stories more often than she wanted to remember about when guys found out that their mate was pregnant. In the beginning they were fine with the idea and then one day, when reality sunk in and with each passing day responsibility drawing nearer and nearer until one day they confess that they cannot handle it, and poof they're gone. Her father told her today that this would happen. She had decided to call him and tell him about his grandchild. Silently she prayed," Please don't let daddy be right. Please."

" Sasha, what is it? Are you feeling alright?"

She told herself that she could lie and then this would delay having the conversation.  If he wanted to dump you would he go through all of this? Maybe its not a dump, but an admission to cheating.  Her thoughts made her almost cry.  Anxiety and irrational thoughts had taken over her mind. The tears were about to come to the surface. As she continued to do self talk, she squeezed her wrist tightly while informing herself that she was a big girl and no matter what he said there would be no crying.

" Baby, what is it? You can tell me if you're in pain, if you're hurting let me know. I'm here for you."

" I'm fine. Now go ahead with what you want to tell me."

The grasp returned to her hands and he took a deep breath. He bit  his bottom lip and looked into her eyes.

" You know I love you, right? Well I want us to be a real family. Will you marry me?"

Did she hear him right? Did he say the 'm' word? If there was any doubt that he said marry the ring confirmed it. She flew out of her chair and around the table to Chris. One moment they were in the dining room kissing and then they were in the bedroom.

Sasha and Chris sat on the edge of the bed discussing wedding plans. She was saying,"... the reception at Dunes Park Pavilion. It's August twenty sixth now and if we get married on October fifteenth that's less than two months away. Do you think we'll be able to get it? I've always dreamed of having my reception there."

" Well, baby if that's what you want then I'll just have to see to it. Don't worry I'll call Margie Clemmons, she works there and I'll make it happen." He kissed her soft lips and she looked up at him with her big brown eyes and whispered, " You promise?" Chris gave her a sincere and earnest look and whispered back," Promise." Then they embraced each other until the telephone rang. Chris struggled to pull away from Sasha to walk over to the night stand to pick up the telephone.

" Yeah, this me. You want me to come now? Let's do it tomorrow. I'm trying to spend quality time with Sasha. Now! It has to be now? Dang, man. I'm on my way."
